Before starting this activity, warm up the students with some quick surveys. For some ideas, see our Captur Paddles and Opinion Surveys article.
Have students work in small groups. They should prepare a short introduction to their survey question.
Option: Beforehand, the students write down their prediction along with their introduction. They give a copy of this to the teacher. Afterward, they write a report on how the vote went, how well or badly it aligned with their predictions, and their opinion on why the vote went that way
To start, have the students put their reply scale on the board. After their introduction to the survey question, they pose the question. The class replies all at once, using their Captur paddles to give their answer. The students should count how many of the class responded with each option.
Discussion Option
After all of the votes have been counted, the students can write those tallies on the board, next to the options.
At this time, the teacher should tell the class to discuss their reaction to the vote tally, and to explain their reasons for their own vote. A follow-up vote could be taken later, to see if anyone had changed their minds.
