On Nov. 20, Paul and Bill will give a workshop during the JALT International Conference in Tokyo.

This conference will be held November 18-20 at the National Olympics Memorial Center in Yoyogi, Tokyo. The full title of the conference is the 37th Annual International Conference on Language Teaching and Learning & Educational Materials Exhibition.

Here are our workshop details.

Active Participation Using Answer Paddles

Day: Sunday November 20th. Time: 4:55 PM – 5:55 PM. Room: 408

Short Description:
We can motivate students to stay focused in the classroom through student response systems (SRS) that require all students to respond simultaneously. The presenters demonstrate a low-tech SRS they have developed using simple, 2-sided answer paddles. SRS improve student concentration, and encourage an active engagement with the material.

Long Description:
Too often, students' motivation to listen closely decreases after answering the teacher's question, confident of not being called on again soon. We teachers assume that we are talking to the entire class, thus providing them all with some valuable input, but input is only valuable to those who attend to it. We can encourage and motivate students to stay focused in the classroom through periodic and judicious use of student response systems (SRS) that require all students to respond simultaneously. Research on SRS in classrooms goes back over 20 years, but mainly in physics and math classes. SRS improve student concentration, and encourage a more active engagement with the material. The presenters developed a low-tech SRS using simple, 2-sided answer paddles that they have been using in their regular EFL classes for the past two years. After a brief overview of the research on SRS in classrooms, the presenters will demonstrate how they use their answer paddles with their students. Participants will learn how to adapt their existing materials to use with this simple, low-tech SRS. The presenters will demonstrate new activities that they have developed. Participants will also learn various techniques for getting feedback on how well students understand the material.
